Feb. 25: $ave the Climate Action Plan Rally
|
REP-SF member South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN) has joined the SF Climate Emergency Coalition, League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, and other environmental justice groups to oppose proposed budget cuts to the SF Environment Department. The mayor is proposing such drastic cuts to SF Environment Department’s budget that have the following devastating impacts:
• Critical climate work to reduce emissions will stop. • Staff with years of climate-action expertise will lose their jobs. • Millions in future grants are at risk. Since 2022-23, SF Environment Dept. (SFE) has brought in $29 for every $1 invested. Spending on SFE is leverage, not overhead.
Join us on Wed, February 25, 12 noon, at City Hall for our rally to save the Climate Action Plan! Please RSVP using the form here: bit.ly/climateactionrally

The Future of Independent Commissions in San Francisco: Responding to the Recommendations of the Commission Streamlining Task Force
Where: The Women’s Building, 3543 18th Street
When: Wednesday, March 11, 2026
Time: 6:00 – 7:30 PM, Doors open at 5:30 PM

In November 2024, voters approved Proposition E to streamline City commissions to better serve the people of San Francisco. Instead, the Commission Streamlining Task Force is attempting to strip power from the public and expand mayoral power.
Join organizers and community members on March 11 for an educational event to build action in the city and protect commissions. We will hear from commissioners, learn about the recommendations’ impacts, and how folks can take action as the recommendations come before the Board of Supervisors next month in March and then to voters in November 2026.

Historic UESF Strike: First SF Teachers' Strike in 47 Years
|
On Monday, Feb. 9, United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) launched its first teachers' strike since 1979. Mission Local reports, "The strike comes after a nearly year-long bargaining effort between the union and the school district over wage increases, healthcare for dependents, special education, and other issues." On Feb. 10, "around a thousand educators, parents, and families attended a rally at Mission Dolores Park in support of educators on strike." (Photo above from Mission Local)

New Study: Deregulation is NOT the Answer to Affordability
|
New study shows that deregulation is not the answer to the affordable housing crisis, 48Hills, Feb. 2, 2026: Tim Redmond writes, "Upzoning might make SF affordable—in 100 years. Or we could address economic inequality, the real cause of the problem." A new study by four leading urban scholars shows that deregulating housing does not make housing affordable. Redmond writes, "The study directly contradicts the narrative that has been driving housing policy at the local, state, and federal level." This is the latest academic study to confirm what our advocacy has always said: San Francisco’s housing unaffordability crisis is not about a lack of housing supply – it’s about a lack of affordable housing. What works to make housing affordable is creating permanently, truly affordable housing, not building overpriced housing and waiting for it to trickle down.

Equitable Building Decarbonization
|
REP-SF member SOMCAN is conducting outreach for the Equitable Building Decarbonization program, a statewide program that helps low-income homeowners and tenants electrify and improve their homes! Gas-powered appliances like stoves and water heaters are extremely harmful to our health, and participants in the program can receive non-polluting electric appliances at no cost! Program participants can also choose to upgrade their home's electric and water systems or perform basic repairs.
You can contact Teresa Dulalas at tdulalas@somcan.org or call 415-574-7143 to learn more about the program!
